Born and raised in Switzerland, Martin studied stone masonry at the School for
Arts in Berne, Switzerland. His passion for the fundamental and historically-
significant techniques of Old World Masters grew through his years of training
and evolved into his life’s work as a sculptor of stone.
After completing studies, Martin applied his skills to the restoration of both secular and religious historical structures including medieval cathedrals and castles where he was commissioned to fashion numerous important pieces over the course of 25 years. In 2009, Martin carved out a new life for himself and brought his art, passion and Old World techniques with him when he settled in Nevada City, CA.
Meticulously employing traditional sculpting techniques using primarily marble, sandstone and limestone, Martin creates intricately sculpted designs that weave historic and visionary images into each piece and then lavishly embellishes them with gold leaf and handmade oil paints.
Since 2009, Martin has shown his work throughout the western United States including a private exhibition at US Bank Commons in Sacramento in 2011 and a solo exhibit at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley, CA in April 2013. Three of his pieces are currently in a group exhibit at The Arts Building Gallery in Auburn, CA through September 28. His studio is on the upcoming Nevada County Open Studios Tour in October 2013.
Currently accepting commissions of contemporary works where time-tested craftsmanship enhances modern application in commercial, home and garden architectural projects, Martin also enjoys teaching the vanishing art of sculpting stone.
